But eight days prior to this festival are considered to be inauspicious and this inauspicious period is known as Holashtak.

Holashtak is a Sanskrit word derived from ‘Hola’ and ‘Ashtak’, which in English mean eight days before Holi.

Holashtak begins on Shukla Paksha Ashtami in the Hindu calendar month of Phalgun and ends on Phalgun Purnima – the Holi day.
